        Dexamethasone is a steroidal drug that is used in the prevention of inflammation caused by different allergic conditions, skin disorders, intestinal disorders, and certain cancers.

        Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid hormone which works by decreasing your body’s involuntary defensive response and reduces symptoms such as swelling and allergic-type reactions. It can also be used as replacement hormone therapy and to produce anti-inflammatory effects in various organs.

        Indications and Usage

        Dexamethasone injection is a corticosteroid used for various health diseases and conditions. As an anti-inflammatory medication, dexamethasone sodium phosphate relieves inflammation and decreases swelling. It is used to treat and prevent allergic reactions. It can also be used to treat various conditions including arthritis, certain cancers, ophthalmologic diseases, intestinal disorders, breathing problems asthma, adrenal gland problems, swelling, and skin disease.

        It can also be used to treat nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy and to test for Cushing’s syndrome. This injection works by decreasing the body’s natural defense system in order to prevent allergic-type reactions.

        Contraindications

        It is contraindicated in the patients who are hypersensitive towards dexamethasone. It is also contraindicated in patients who have any fungal infection or are exposed to measles/chickenpox.

        Precautions

        Do not take dexamethasone injection if:

        • You are allergic to dexamethasone;
        • You have tuberculosis, cirrhosis, or another liver disease;
        • You have a history of malaria;
        • You have osteoporosis, glaucoma, cataracts, ulcerative colitis, depression, or any other mental illness;
        • You recently had a heart attack or congestive heart failure;
        • You have herpes, an eyes infection, or high blood pressure.

        There is little evidence in regards to the use of dexamethasone during pregnancy or breast feeding, so consult your doctor or healthcare professional before administering the injection.

        Administration and Dosage

        Refer to your doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise. Dosage depends on medical condition and treatment response. When used in newborns and certain patients, a preservative-free form should be prescribed with a preservative-free IV fluid.

        Interactions
