Additional Information
Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking tetracycline. In particular, talk to your health care providers in case of allergic reactions.
If you are taking other medicines, or you think you may need to use an alternative form of Tetracycline HCL, always remember to ask your doctor’s opinion first. In these cases it’s useful to keep with you a list of all the drugs you are taking. Talk to him before starting any new cure as well, vitamins and natural products included.
If your condition does not improve or becomes worse, then call your health care providers.
Driving or operating machinery is okay but should be avoided until you know how it reacts with your body.
Indications and Usage
Take Tetracycline exactly as suggested by your doctor, do not take it in larger or smaller quantities or for a shorter or longer time than prescribed. Take it without food, better if a couple of hours before or after eating. Take it with a whole cup of water, avoid mixing it with dairy products unless your doctor tells you so.
If you are going to use this medicine for a long time, you may need to have frequent examinations.
If you need a surgery, tell your doctor in advance that you are taking Tetracycline.
Keep taking Tetracycline until the entire prescribed time is over even if you start feeling better before. Interrupting the therapy ahead of time may determine an aggravation of the infection.
If you miss a dose, take the skipped ones as soon as you think about it. If the time is too close to the one of the next dose, then it’s just better to skip and not to overdose.
Tetracycline cannot be used for other types of infections as cold or flu.
Administration and Dosage
The dose may be decided depending on your age, condition, response to the treatment, weight or other medical conditions you have. The dosage may also depend on the problem you are going to treat. Do always consult your doctor to decide the daily amount of Tetracycline you have to take daily.
Refer to your doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise. The usual dose for adults is: 500mg. The usual dose for children above 8 years old for bacterial infection: 25 to 50mg/kg orally per day divided into 4 equal doses.
Interactions
Avoid taking laxatives, antacids, calcium supplements, multivitamins or iron supplements for at least two hours before or after taking Tetracycline.
Antibiotics may cause diarrhea, which can represent a sign of a new infection. If you have bloody diarrhea call your doctor promptly and don’t take anti-diarrhea drugs if not prescribed by your doctor.
Avoid getting a tan while taking Tetracycline, as it may cause you to sunburn more quickly. Use sunscreen and sunglasses to protect yourself.
If you are taking or have been taking other antibiotics, vitamins or mineral supplements, antacids or laxatives, blood thinnes, tretinoin or isotretinoin, inform your doctor before starting taking Tetracycline.
Overdose
If you take a larger dose than you should take, tell your doctor, pharmacist or health care specialist immediately even if you don’t feel bad. Bring with you the container and tell them about the amount you took and related timing.
Adverse Reactions and Precautions
If you are allergic to Tetracycline or similar drugs like demeclocycline, doxycycline, minocycline and tigecycline, you should avoid taking this medicine. Also remember to inform your doctor you have kidney or liver problems before starting to take Tetracycline.
If you are using this medication to cure gonorrhea, your doctor or health care specialist you refer to, should make a check up on you to see if you have syphilis as well.
If you are pregnant or you are planning to be, you should ask your doctor for a consultation before starting this therapy. In fact taking Tetracycline during pregnancy can affect the bones and teeth development of your baby, especially if you start the treatment during the last half of pregnancy (it may lead to an irreversible teeth discoloration in the baby’s life). There is high risk of causing teeth and bones development also during breast-feeding. Always ask your doctor’s opinion first. For the same reason, children younger than 8 years old shouldn’t take this drug as well. Moreover Tetracycline may make birth control pills not as effective, causing unexpected pregnancies. Ask your doctor or health care provider for an alternative birth control item to prevent pregnancy.
