Indications and Usage

Ribavirin is indicated in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C, a viral infection of the liver. This helps the body’s immune system fight the infection. It is only meant for prevention of viral infections. This medication is not effective in treating bacterial infections.

Do not take ribavirin injections if:

  • You are hypersensitive to any of the ingredients;
  • You have a hemoglobin blood cell disorder;
  • You have autoimmune hepatitis;
  • You have severe kidney disease;
  • You are also taking didanosine;
  • You are pregnant, or if you are a man whose sexual partner is pregnant.

Ribavirin injection can cause birth defects or death in an unborn baby. Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant, or if you are a man and your sexual partner is pregnant. Consult your doctor or health care professional before using ribavirin injections.

Administration and Dosage

Refer to your doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.

Ribavirin might interact with azathioprine or medicines to treat HIV or AIDS, abacavir, lamivudine, stavudine, zalcitabine, and zidovudine. Consult with your doctor about any medication you are taking before you begin treatment with ribavirin injection.

The enzyme inductors (barbiturates, glutethimide, phenylbutazone) attenuate the analgin effects. Analgin potentiates the effects of the drugs possessing CNS depressant activity. Concurrent administration with chlorpromazine is related to a risk of severe hypothermia. Analgin can be used in combination with buscolysin, atropin, or codein.

Consult your doctor about any medications you are taking before your treatment with ribavirin injections.

Symptoms of overdose include trouble breathing and passing out. Other symptoms of overdose may include: nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fainting, loss of appetite, trouble sleeping, or impaired taste. These symptoms should be reported to a medical professional. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical help urgently.
