Paracetamol , also known as acetaminophen or APAP injection, are a mild analgesic used to treat mild to moderate pain. It can also be used to relieve fever in adults. With a combination of opioid analgesics, paracetamol can be used to treat moderate to severe pain. Unlike other common analgesics, paracetamol injection has little anti-inflammatory activity.
Paracetamol injection, or acetaminophen, is one of the most important medications needed in a basic health system. Each mL contains 150mg of paracetamol. Paracetamol injection is given by injection into vein or muscle by a healthcare professional in a hospital or clinical setting.
Side Effects:
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of paracetamol. Always consult a doctor or health care professional for medical advice before use.
Common side effects include, but may not be limited to nausea, vomiting, swelling near injection site or trouble sleeping. Seek medical attention if the following develop: allergic reaction, itching, hives, trouble breathing, urination problems, dark urine, pale stools, stomach pain, or blistered skin.

Indications and Usage
Paracetamol is indicated in the management of mild to moderate pain in both adults and pediatric patients (above 2 years). It can be also used to treat moderate to severe pain alone or in combination with opioid analgesics both in adult and pediatric patients (above 2 years).
It also works like anti-pyretic which help in reducing fever in adult and pediatric patients.
Precautions
Do not take paracetamol injection if:
- You are allergic to paracetamol or other containing ingredients;
- You have a medical history of hepatic injury;
- You have serious skin reactions such as acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis and stevens-johnson syndrome.
Deadly liver problems or serious skin reactions can occur with the use of paracetamol injection. Paracetamol injection can cause acute liver failure, which can result in liver transplant or death. Do not exceed the dose of 4,000mg in a day.
Use of paracetamol injection during pregnancy or breastfeeding is safe and shows low risk. Though, paracetamol use may be associated with increased risk of childhood asthma and ADHD.
Consult your doctor or health care professional before administering paracetamol injection in pregnant or nursing mothers.
Avoid using other medications containing acetaminophen. Excessive acetaminophen might lead to fatal liver diseases. Avoid drinking alcohol when using paracetamol and tell your doctor if you have a history of alcohol addiction.
Driving or operating machinery is okay as it does not cause dizziness or induce sleep.
Administration and Dosage
Refer to your doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Follow your doctor’s dose and schedule. Do not exceed the recommended dosage. Usual dose for adults is: 650mg IV every 4 hours. Usual dose for children is: 12.5mg/kg every 4 hour.
Do not exceed the dose of 4,000mg a day. Paracetamol injection should be administered within 6 hours after opening of the ampoule.
Interactions
Acetaminophen can interact with other medications, such as warfarin and other blood thinners.
Consult with your doctor about medications you are taking or existing medical conditions you have before your treatment with paracetamol injection.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include trouble breathing and passing out. These symptoms have to be reported to the medical health professional. Seek medical help urgently.
