        Metamizole (also known as Dipyrone and branded as Analgin in specific countries) is a drug that belongs to the group of analgesics. It is used to treat severe post-traumatic or post-operative pain when treatment with other non-opioid medicines have had no effect. Metamizole Sodium Injection is used as an analgesic and anti-pyretic to relieve pain and fever.

        The mechanism of action is based on the inhibition of central cyclooxygenase-3 and on the activation of the cannabinoid and opiodergic system.

        Indications and Usage

        Metamizole sodium injections are used primarily to relieve pain and fever. This medication is also used for the treatment of respiratory, gastroenteritis, and urogenital diseases, such as asthma and pneumonia. It is effective against blood poisoning and pyogenic dermatitis.


        Metamizole sodium is contraindicated in some conditions such as:

        • Deficiency of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase;
        • Severe hepatic insufficiency;
        • Renal insufficiency and acute intermittent porphyria.

        Do not take metamizole sodium if:

        • You are allergic to any of the ingredients;
        • You have low blood pressure;
        • You have glaucoma;
        • You are younger than 18 years.

        Metamizole should not be used by pregnant women and nursing mothers. It passes into breast milk and may harm your baby.

        Administration and Dosage

        Refer to your doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise. In acute cases, best results are obtained through slow intravenous injection (1ml per minute) with the patient in recumbent position. It may also be administered intramuscularly.

        The usual dose for adults is 5ml intramuscularly or slowly intravenously, and this dose may be repeated every two to three hours. In milder cases, dosage ranges from 2 to 5ml intramuscularly. This medicine is not recommended for children under 3 years of age.


        Metamizole injections can have many possible interactions with other drugs, such as anti-coagulants, antibiotics, corticosteroids, and anti-diabetic drugs. They may also lead to some adverse effects by some sedatives and hypnotics.
