If your condition does not improve or becomes worse, then call your healthcare providers. Never use this medicine for a longer period of time than you have been told by your doctor.
Driving or operating machinery is okay, as it does not impair motor functions.
Do NOT use chloramphenicol if: you are allergic to chloramphenicol; you have low white or red blood cell count or decreased blood platelets; you have a minor infection such as a cold, flu, or throat infection; if you are taking other medications that decrease blood marrow such as chemotherapy.
Indications and Usage
Chloramphenicol is available in the form of capsules and is consumed orally.
Always take chloramphenicol capsules exactly as suggested by your doctor, pharmacist or health care provider. The dose will be set depending on your condition, response to the treatment and weight. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure. Take chloramphenicol orally with a cup of water.
It is also advisable to take it around the same time every day.
Administration and Dosage
For adults, the usual dose is 500 mg every 6 hours or 50 mg per kg divided into daily doses. This medicine is NOT suitable for children. It’s suggested to take chloramphenicol at the same time every day for the whole duration of the treatment and keep taking it until the prescribed quantity is done even if symptoms start disappearing before.
Remember that if you are allergic to chloramphenicol or to any medicine, food or other chemicals, you have to tell your health care provider about the allergy and related symptoms. Always consult your doctor before taking any decision.
Don’t take chloramphenicol if you are pregnant if you plan to get pregnant or breastfeeding, because it might be dangerous to you and your baby. This drug can cause Grey Baby Syndrome, determining the baby to be born weak and with grey skin.
Interactions
Chloramphenicol doesn’t have known serious interactions with other medicines. Anyway, it’s always useful to keep a list of all the medicines you are taking, in order to show it to your doctor, pharmacist or healthcare provider. Don’t start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before asking your doctor’s suggestion.
Interactions with chloramphenicol may be caused by lurasidone, warfarin, vilazodone, typhoid vaccine live, red yeast rice, mefloquine, cholera vaccine, cefoxitin, BCG vaccine live.
This list doesn’t include all interactions with chloramphenicol. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice and information, if you have doubts or concerns.
Overdose
If you take a bigger dose than you should take, tell your doctor, pharmacist or healthcare specialist promptly even if you don’t feel bad. Bring with you the container and tell them about the amount you took and related timing.
Adverse reactions and Precautions
Some very serious and deadly blood dyscrasias have occurred with chloramphenicol, especially after short-term and prolonged assumption. As a consequence, you may have more chances to get infections, slow healing or bleeding problems. Chloramphenicol caused aplastic anemia which led eventually to leukemia. Always check your blood and talk to your doctor before taking this drug.
