What is Albendazole + Niclosamide?

Therapeutic Class:
Target Species:

Active Ingredients: Albendazole, Niclosamide

Albendazole + Niclosamide Oral Suspension is a combination anthelmintic drug used in the treatment and control of amphistomes, liver flukes, tapeworms, and roundworms in animals such as dogs, cats, cows, goats, sheep, and pigs. It is indicated for gastrointestinal infections caused by roundworms, hookworms, pinworms, whipworms, and threadworms.

Albendazole + Niclosamide Oral Suspension is also an effective treatment for cysticercosis and echinococcosis.

Albendazole belongs to the drug class called benzimidazole anthelmintics. It exhibits broad-spectrum action against many varieties of worms, such as roundworms, tapeworms, and flukes of domestic animals and humans. It works by inhibiting tubulin polymerization. As an effect, the worm's ability to utilize glucose is impaired, which results in immobilization and death.

This medication kills worms, but eggs can survive for several weeks after treatment, so it may be necessary to repeat treatment. It is primarily used to treat nematodes and trematodes in domestic animals. Its effectiveness against tapeworms is limited, but it has a broad safety margin and works against a wide range of roundworms. Absorption of this drug varies depending on factors such as species, formulation, dosage, solubility, and the esophageal groove reflex. Benzimidazoles, which are water-soluble, are absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract with varying degrees of absorption depending on the animal species. Anthelmintic drugs like Albendazole undergo absorption into the bloodstream, distribution throughout the body, and eventual elimination through feces and urine after metabolic processing in the liver. Albendazole is particularly beneficial for horses and ruminants because of its slow passage through the cecum and rumen.

Albendazole does not work against external parasites.

Niclosamide is also an anthelmintic drug. It is effective against many types of intestinal tapeworms. This drug is effective against the adult stages of liver flukes and it is used against fasciolosis and haemonchosis in sheep and cattle.

It is important to note that Albendazole + Niclosamide Oral Suspension is for veterinary purposes only. This formulation is intended to be prescribed by a veterinary doctor or animal care specialist for an animal.

Uses

What is Albendazole + Niclosamide used for?

It is used to treat various parasitic infections caused by nematodes, cestodes, and protozoa, including:

  • liver flukes (Fasciola hepatica, adults only)
  • roundworms and lungworms
  • tapeworms (Moniezia, adults only)
  • immature and mature amphistomes

What animals can be treated with Albendazole + Niclosamide?

This medicine is recommended for dogs, cats, and livestock animals such as cows, goats, sheep, and pigs. Do not use Albendazole to treat birds like pigeons or doves.

How is Albendazole + Niclosamide Oral Suspension used?

This medicine has been manufactured as a liquid, which is intended to be administered orally.

How does Albendazole work against gastrointestinal nematode infections in cattle?

The dosage for treating gastrointestinal nematode infections in cattle is determined by the body weight of the animals. Albendazole when given to animals can decrease the nematode egg output, maintaining near-complete prevention for approximately four months. The concentration of pepsinogen may decrease during the course of treatment.

Cattle treated with Albendazole have reduced contamination of pastures with Trichostrongylid larvae, resulting in a cleaner environment post-treatment. This is because the feces is less contaminated.Treated animals also demonstrate an increased rate of weight gain compared to their untreated counterparts.

How does Albendazole work against Haemonchus in lambs?

Lambs diagnosed with Haemonchus infection should be treated with Albendazole. Testing, including the in vivo fecal egg count reduction test and controlled antihelminthic efficacy test, has demonstrated the drug's effectiveness. When administered as directed by the manufacturer, Albendazole shows complete efficacy, achieving a 100% success rate in eliminating Haemonchus contortus.

How does Niclosamide help in treating parasitic infections in animals?

Niclosamide affects the energy metabolism of parasites. It targets and interferes with the mitochondria of the parasites, which are needed for their energy production and survival. This leads to paralysis of the parasites from the host's gastrointestinal tract. It is effective against tapeworms (cestodes) and some trematodes (flukes) in various animal species.

Does food affect Albendazole absorption?

In pigs, adding soybean oil to pelleted food enhances and prolongs drug absorption, resulting in increased systemic exposure for up to 48 hours post-treatment. To maximize effectiveness, it is recommended to extend the contact time. Administering the total dose more frequently at 12-hour intervals and prolonging the exposure period, especially with highly soluble drugs, produces better results, even in cases involving worms resistant to benzimidazoles. To improve efficacy, animals should reduce their feed intake, which slows down the drug's passage rate.

Is only this drug enough to treat a parasitic infection?

It depends on the cause of the parasitic infection and the animal’s response. In some mild cases, only this antiparasitic drug can help in the treatment process.

How should Albendazole + Niclosamide Oral Suspension be stored?

It should be stored in a dark, dry location between 2-25°C. Keep the bottle tightly sealed when not in use.

Is there a withdrawal period after treatment with Albendazole + Niclosamide?

The withdrawal time is 8-14 days for meat and 3-5 days for milk. The exact duration will depend on local regulations.

Dosage

How much Albendazole + Niclosamide should be given to livestock animals?

For sheep and goats, the usual dose is 5-10ml/15kg of body weight. For cows, the usual dose is 1ml/2-3kg of body weight.

Refer to a veterinary doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Albendazole + Niclosamide Oral Suspension.

Some common side effects may include but are not limited to:

  • anorexia in dogs
  • mild lethargy or depression in cats

Serious side effects may include:

  • allergy or hypersensitivity reactions

For a comprehensive list of all possible side effects of this medication, consult a veterinarian.

Precautions

Do NOT use Albendazole + Niclosamide Oral Suspension for an animal that:

  • has a known allergy or hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.
  • is in the first trimester of pregnancy.
  • is a pigeon or a dove.

Treatment with this drug should be administered with caution for an animal that:

  • has liver disease.
  • is pregnant or lactating.

There are known interactions between Albendazole and other drugs, including cimetidine, dexamethasone, and praziquantel.

Regular use of anthelmintics to treat parasitic infections in ruminants and other animals carries the risk of developing drug resistance. Prolonged use of the same anthelmintic may lead to adverse effects, and it is advisable to consult a veterinarian before switching to a different anthelmintic. Inadequate dosing of anthelmintics is known to contribute to the emergence of drug resistance. Prophylactic treatment practices can promote resistance, rendering the drug ineffective. This medication is administered when animals are diagnosed with a specific disease.

In cases of accidental overdose, prompt management is crucial. It is essential to strictly follow the recommended dosage by the veterinarian, and if a dose is missed, do not administer two doses simultaneously. Overdosing can result in adverse effects on the nervous, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal systems.

Maintaining proper hygiene practices during the administration of this treatment is essential to prevent the spread of parasites within the animal's environment. Even after successful treatment, animals can become reinfected if their surroundings are contaminated with parasites due to poor environmental hygiene. It is recommended to keep animals in a dry lot for 12 to 24 hours after treatment to prevent the deposition of eggs and larvae in the pasture, reducing the risk of reinfection.

Always wash your hands thoroughly after handling this product. Pregnant women should not handle Albendazole products, as it can be absorbed through direct skin contact.

If any side effects arise, they should be reported to a veterinarian as soon as possible.
