General Information:
AdvaCare is a GMP manufacturer of clarithromycin oral suspensions.
Clarithromycin belongs to the class of antibiotics known as macrolides.
Clarithromycin’s mechanism of action is by stopping the causative organism (bacteria) from multiplying. By stopping its multiplication, the bacteria are rendered weak and inactive.
Clarithromycin handles bacterial infections and may not be effective for fungal and viral infections.
Clarithromycin is excreted in active form in the bile (70%) and about 20% is excreted in active form in the urine.
Side Effects:
As with all pharmaceutical medicines, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of clarithromycin oral suspensions.
Always consult a physician for medical advice before use.
Common side effects may include nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, abnormal taste in the mouth, liver problems, heart rate issues, hypersensitivity and diarrhea.

Indications and Usage
Clarithromycin is used to treat and manage certain bacterial infections.
It is also combined with other drugs to treat mycobacterial infections or stomach ulcers.
It is indicated in the treatment of lower respiratory tract infections, upper respiratory tract infections, skin and skin structure diseases, acute otitis media and other infections of bacterial origin.
Administration and Dosage
Use of clarithromycin oral suspensions during pregnancy or breastfeeding does not appear to be harmful.
Consult your doctor or health care professional before taking clarithromycin.
Refer to your doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage.
Do not exceed the advisable dosage. The usual dose for adults is 250mg/5ml taken twice a day.
The usual dose for children is 125mg/5ml taken twice per day depending on age and body weight.
Interactions
Possible interactions with clarithromycin oral suspensions include colchicines, cholesterol drugs, HIV drugs, hepatitis C drugs, fungal drugs and other antibiotics like telithromycin.
Clarithromycin oral suspensions should not be taken with alcohol.
Consult with your doctor about any medications you are taking, before your treatment with clarithromycin oral suspensions.
Contraindications
Clarithromycin is contraindicated if:
- You have a history of hypersensitivity to macrolide antibiotics
- You are hypokalaemic
- You are taking other drugs without your doctor’s approval
- You have cardiac rhythm problems.
Overdose
Taking more medicines may cause poisoning and serious side effects.
Please call the emergency department if you suspect clarithromycin oral suspensions overdose.
Adverse Reactions and Precautions
Do not take clarithromycin if:
- You have a liver problem
- You have heart rhythm problems
- You have diarrhea
- You have coronary artery disease.
No adverse reactions have been reported.
