What is Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim (Co-Trimoxazole)?
Active Ingredients: Sulfamethoxazole, Trimethoprim
Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim (Co-Trimoxazole) for Oral Suspension is a fixed-dose combination drug used to treat bacterial infections. It is indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of toxoplasmosis and Pneumocystis jiroveci pneumonitis. It may be used to treat infections, like otitis media, where a single antibiotic result is less effective.
Co-Trimoxazole is a combination of two antibiotics: sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. Each 5ml contains 40mg of Trimethoprim and 200mg of Sulfamethoxazole.
Sulfamethoxazole is classified as a bacteriostatic sulfonamide antibiotic. Trimethoprim belongs to the class of antifolate antibiotics. These two antibiotics display complementary mechanisms of action, thus enhancing the effectiveness of treatment.
