It is effective against infections caused by Eimeria species, including Eimeria tenella, E. necatrix, E. acervulina, E. brunetti, E. mitis (mivati), E. maxima. E. crandallis and E. ovinoidalis. It is also used in horses for equine protozoal myeloencephalitis (EPM).

Diclazuril is classified as an anticoccidial of the benzeneacetonitrile group. It has a coccidiocidal effect on the asexual or sexual stages of the development cycle of the parasite.
