What is Quinine Sulphate?
Active Ingredients: Quinine Sulphate
Quinine sulfate, also known as quinine sulphate, is an antimalarial used to treat falciparum malaria in both adults and children over 12 years, but it can also be used to treat nocturnal leg cramps in adults and the elderly. It has not been proven effective for the prevention of malaria.
The active ingredient in these tablets is quinine sulfate. This substance can also act as an analgesic, which reduces pain; an anti-inflammatory, which reduces inflammation or swelling; an antipyretic, which reduces fever; and an antiparasitic, which treats parasitic diseases.

Uses
What is Quinine Sulfate used for?
It is used to treat falciparum malaria in adults and children aged 12 years or older. It is also used to treat nocturnal leg cramps in adults and the elderly.
How should Quinine Sulfate Tablets be used?
This medication is intended to be taken orally. It should be taken with food at the same time every day.
What dose should be taken?
For malaria:
- The usual dose for adults is 600mg every eight hours for 7 days.
- The usual dose for children aged 12 years or over is 600mg every eight hours for 7 days.
For nocturnal cramps, the usual dose for adults is 2000mg at bedtime. The guideline dose can be adjusted depending on the size of the patient and the severity of the disease.
Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for more specific guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.
Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of quinine sulfate.
Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:
- diarrhea
- dizziness
- headache
- muscle weakness
- nausea
- rashes
- visual disturbances
- vomiting
- low blood pressure
- low glucose levels
Seek immediate medical attention if the following develop:
- asthma
- fever
- flushing
- frequent nosebleeds or other unusual bleeding
- itchy skin rash
- light sensitivity
- swelling of the lips, face, throat, or tongue

Precautions
Do NOT use Dihydroartemisinin Tablets if: • You are taking mefloquine (HCI) or voriconazole.
The use of Dihydroartemisinin Tablets during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be avoided. Consult a doctor or healthcare professional before taking dihydroartemisinin.
