Phenobarbital Sodium Injection is a drug used to treat or prevent certain types of seizures. This medication is also prescribed as a short-term sedative or as a treatment for insomnia. It is also used as an adjunct for acute alcohol withdrawal. Phenobarbital is also used to reduce bilirubin levels in newborns.
Phenobarbital Sodium is classified as a barbiturate. It works by slowing down the activity of the brain and central nervous system.

Uses
What is Phenobarbital Sodium used for?
It is used to treat seizure disorder, status epilepticus, and acute alcohol withdrawal (adjunctly). It is also used as a sedative.
How is Phenobarbital Sodium Injection used?
This medication is manufactured as a solution, which is intended to be administered by IM/IV injection.
What dose should be given?
For seizure disorder, the usual dose for adults is 300-800mg IV or 15-20mg/kg per dose IV.
For pediatric patients who are:
- neonates: the usual dose is 3-5mg/kg per day, divided and given once or twice per day.
- infants: the usual dose is 5-6mg/kg per day, divided and given once or twice per day.
- children between 1 and 5 years old: the usual dose is 6-8mg/kg per day, divided and given once or twice per day.
- children between 6 and 12 years old: the usual dose is 4-6mg/kg per day, divided and given once or twice per day.
- children older than 12 years old:the usual dose is 1-3mg/kg per day, divided and given once or twice per day.
The dosage may be adjusted based on treatment response and serum levels.
For status epilepticus, the usual dose for adults is 10-20mg/kg per dose IV, given every 20 minutes as needed. For pediatric patients, the usual dose is 15-20mg/kg per dose, and then 5-10mg/kg per dose every 15-30 minutes as needed.
For sedation, the usual dose is 10-40mg IV, given twice per day.
For acute alcohol withdrawal (adjunct), the usual dose is 260mg, given once IV/IM. Subsequent doses should be 130mg.

Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Phenobarbital Sodium Injection.
Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:
- drowsiness
- dizziness
- depressed mood
- restlessness or excitability (particularly in children or elderly patients)
- "drunk" feeling
- "hangover" effect the day afterward
Seek medical attention if the following develop:
- weak or shallow breathing
- unusual pain in the neck, shoulders, or arms
- symptoms of red blood cell disorders
- any sign of a severe skin reaction
- any sign of an allergic reaction

Precautions
Do NOT use Phenobarbital Sodium Injection if:
- You are allergic or hypersensitive to any of the ingredients.
- You are allergic to other barbiturates (like nembutal or seconal).
- You have or are pre dispositioned to porphyria.
- You have a severe respiratory disease, such as asthma or COPD
- You have a history of addiction to this or similar medications.
This medication may not be suitable for people with certain conditions, including:
- liver or kidney disease
- chronic pain
- pituitary gland disorder
- a pheochromocytoma
- food or drug allergies
- any condition that requires a blood thinner like warfarin
This medicine should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. It is unknown whether this medication is passed into breast milk, so consult a doctor or healthcare professional before treatment.
Phenobarbital Sodium is known to reduce the efficacy of birth control pills.
Some drugs known to interact include sleeping pills, narcotics, muscle relaxers, or other medicines for anxiety, depression, or seizures.
