General Information:
Dihydroartemisinin is a drug used to treat malaria, and its active ingredient added to piperaquine is used as a prophylaxis, and for the treatment and prevention of malaria. They are manufactured and used as tablets for the treatment of malaria in individuals with suspected or confirmed infection, and for prevention of infection in individuals, with no immunity to malaria, visiting a malaria-endemic region.

Side Effects:
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine tablets. Always consult a doctor or health care professional for medical advice before use. Common side effects include, but may not be limited to vomiting, nausea, dizziness, sleeplessness, and palpitations. Seek medical attention if the following develop: cardiac arrhythmias.

  • You are taking any other medicines, especially other anti-malarial medicines, anti-psychotics, azole antifungals, clomipramine, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, imipramine, or macrolide antibiotics.
  • You are using carbamazepine, efavirenz, enzalutamide, hydantoins, mefloquine, evirapine, phenobarbital, primidone, riamycins.
  • You are taking hormonal birth control.

There is little evidence with regards to the use of dihydroartemisinin piperaquine during pregnancy or breast feeding, and so consult your doctor or health care professional before taking the medicine.
