Ceftiofur Sodium is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, though some consider it a "new generation" cephalosporin. It works by inhibiting cell wall synthesis. It shows bactericidal action against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including Pasteurella, Streptococcus, Salmonella, and E. coli.

How is Ceftiofur Sodium for Injection used?
This drug has been manufactured as a powder for reconstitution. The solution is relatively unstable and should be administered to the patient within 1 hour of reconstitution. This medicine can be administered either by intravenous or intramuscular route.
How should Ceftiofur Sodium for Injection be stored?
This medication should be stored in a dark, dry location under 30°C.
What are the withdrawal times for Ceftiofur Sodium for Injection?
For cattle, the withdrawal time is 3 days for slaughter. For milk, it is best to wait 72 hours after treatment. For swine, the withdrawal time is 4 days for slaughter.
Dosage
How much Ceftiofur Sodium should be given to pigs?
The usual dose is 3-5mg/kg, given every 24 hours. The duration of treatment is 3 days.
How much Ceftiofur Sodium should be given to cows?
For respiratory disease and interdigital necrobacillosis, the usual dose is 1.1-2.2mg/kg given for 3 days IM/SC. If there is not a sufficient recovery response, treatment may continue for 2 more days. For neonatal salmonellosis, the usual dose is 5mg/kg, given once per day. The duration of treatment is 5 days.
Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Ceftiofur Sodium for Injection.
Some common side effects may include but are not limited to:
- gastrointestinal effects (appetite loss, vomiting, diarrhea)
- discoloration at the injection site (in swine and cattle)
