What is Benzalkonium Chloride?
Active Ingredients: Benzalkonium Chloride
Benzalkonium Chloride (BAC) Disinfectant is an antimicrobial surfactant used to disinfect and clean surfaces and equipment, including livestock or poultry housing. It is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that is effective against many strains of viruses, bacteria, or fungi.
Benzalkonium is a quaternary ammonium compound, which is used as a biocide and cationic surfactant. Benzalkonium Chloride has a chloride ion as its counterion. It should be noted that when administered with anionic surfactants and metal ions, this compound has an antagonist effect.
It is effective at both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, E. coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Salmonella typhi, and both enveloped and non-enveloped viruses, such as influenza, herpes simplex, norovirus, and rotavirus. Additionally, Benzalkonium Chloride is effective against many types of fungi, including Candida.
