Pentoxifylline Tablets are used to improve poor blood circulation by increasing blood flow throughout the body. This drug helps reduce symptoms associated with intermittent claudication, such as leg pain or cramping. It should be noted that Pentoxifylline only relieves symptoms and will not cure this condition.
Pentoxifylline is a xanthine derivative belonging to the family of medicines called hemorrheologic agents. It acts as both an anti-inflammatory and vasodilator. Pentoxifylline works by increasing the flexibility of red blood cells and reducing the viscosity of blood.

Uses
What is Pentoxifylline used for?
It's used to improve blood flow and treat symptoms associated with intermittent claudication that may be caused by peripheral vascular disease or other conditions. It is sometimes used to treat acute alcoholic hepatitis.
How are Pentoxifylline Tablets used?
This medication has been manufactured to be taken orally. It should be taken with meals.
What dose should be taken?
For claudication, the usual dose is 400mg, taken twice per day.
For acute alcoholic hepatitis, the usual dose is 400mg, taken twice per day.
Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Pentoxifylline Tablets.
Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:
- dizziness
- gastrointestinal disturbances
Seek medical attention if the following develop:
- chest pain
- heart palpitations
- lightheadedness
- blood in the urine

Precautions
Do NOT use Pentoxifylline Tablets if:

This medication may not be suitable for people with certain conditions, including:
- coronary artery disease or heart disease
- kidney or liver disease
- past history of bleeding in the brain or eyes
- a previous stroke or heart attack
- ulcer (stomach or intestine)
- recent surgery
- currently being treated with theophylline
Do not take Pentoxifylline if you are breastfeeding, as this drug is known to pass into breast milk. It's unknown whether this medicine is safe to take while pregnant. Consult a doctor or healthcare professional before treatment.
