Penicillin V potassium tablets, or phenoxymethylpenicillin, is a group of antibiotics derived from Penicillium fungi. Penicillin V potassium works by interfering with the formation of the bacteria’s cell wall while it is growing, weakening the wall and killing the bacteria.
Penicillin V potassium is an antibiotic used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria such as pneumonia, scarlet fever, and ear, skin, and throat infections. Penicillin V potassium is also used to prevent recurrent rheumatic fever and chorea.
Side Effects:
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of penicillin V potassium. Always consult a doctor or health care professional for medical advice before use. Common side effects include, but may not be limited to: vaginal itching, sore mouth, mild diarrhea, and headache.
Seek medical attention if the following develop: fast or irregular breathing, fever, joint pain, lightheadedness, skin rash, shortness of breath, stomach cramps, abdominal tenderness, confusion, anxiety, agitation, yellow eyes or skin, unusual bleeding, sore throat with fever, watery and severe diarrhea, a decreased amount of urine, and mental depression.

Indications and Usage
Penicillin V potassium is a medium activity antibiotic that fights bacteria in your body.
Penicillin V potassium is used to treat many different types of infections including strep and staph infections, pneumonia, rheumatic fever, and infections affecting the mouth or throat.
Penicillin V potassium is also used to prevent infections of the heart valves in people with certain heart conditions who need to have dental work or surgery.
Contraindications
This drug is contraindicated with patients who developed a previous hypersensitivity reaction to any penicillin.
Precautions
Do NOT use penicillin V potassium tablet if you:
- Are allergic to penicillin V potassium;
- Are taking a tetracycline antibiotic;
- Have nausea, vomiting, gastric dilatation, cardiospasm or intestinal hypermotility.
There is little evidence with regards to the use of penicillin V potassium during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so consult your doctor or health care professional before taking penicillin V potassium.
Driving or operating machinery is safe when administered with penicillin V potassium.
Administration and Dosage
Refer to your doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.
Usual dose for adults and children 12 years of age depends on condition and severity from 250 to 500mg in every 6-8 hours for 8-10 days.
Interactions
There are several drugs that interact with penicillin V potassium tablets including: birth control pills, methotrexate, probenecid or a tetracycline antibiotic such as doxycycline or minocycline.
Overdose
If someone overdoses might have symptoms of hemolytic anemia, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, neuropathy and nephropathy are infrequent reactions, breathlessness or passing out. This has to be reported to the medical health professional. Seek medical help urgently.
Adverse Reactions
Some of the reported adverse reactions which are being frequently being observed are fever and eosinophilia. Consult with your doctor about any medications you are taking, before your treatment with penicillin V potassium tablets.
