Isoniazid Syrup is an antibiotic drug used for the prevention or treatment of tuberculosis disease (TB) in adults and children over 1-month-old. This medication may be used as a monotherapy or with other anti-tuberculosis agents, such as rifapentine and rifampin, and is typically not prescribed as a first-line therapy.

Isoniazid is also known as isonicotinic acid hydrazide (INH). It is an antibiotic which is thought to work by impairing cell metabolism and inhibiting cell wall synthesis.

What is Isoniazid Syrup used for?

It's used to treat or prevent tuberculosis infections.

How is Isoniazid Syrup used?

This medication has been manufactured as a liquid to be taken orally. It should be taken on an empty stomach.

What dose should be taken?

For active TB, the usual dose for adults is 5mg/kg per dose, given once per day. The maximum dosage is 300mg per day.

For latent TB, the usual dose for adults is 5mg/kg per dose, given once a day for 6 or 9 months. The maximum dosage is 300mg per day. The 6-month duration is suitable for HIV-negative patients.

For active TB in children from 1 month to 14 years old, the usual dose is 10-15mg/kg, given once a day for 6-18 months. The exact duration will depend on the site and severity of the infection.

For active TB in children older than 15 years old, the usual dose is 5mg/kg, given once a day for 6-18 months. The exact duration will depend on the site and severity of the infection.

For latent TB in children, the usual dose is 10-30mg/kg, given once a day for 6 or 9 months. The exact duration will depend on the site and severity of the infection. The 6-month duration is suitable for HIV-negative patients.

To prevent TB in children younger than 5 years old, the usual dose is 10mg/kg, given once a day for 4 months.

The exact dosage is based on medical condition, response to the treatment, age, and weight. Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed the advisable dosage.

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Isoniazid Syrup.

Possible interactions may occur with other pharmaceutical products, including acetaminophen/paracetamol, antacids, diabetes medicines, antifungals, anticonvulsants, theophylline, and zalcitabine.

The risk of serious liver problems (including fatalities) is highest in adults between 35 and 65 years old.

Avoid drinking alcohol while undergoing treatment with Isoniazid. Certain foods or drinks may need to be avoided during treatment. Some foods include green tea, and aged cheese.
