Dextrose provides a source of calories and energy. Dextrose is readily absorbed, helps in decreasing the nitrogen and body protein losses, and stimulates glycogen deposition and help in preventing ketosis.
Sodium, the major cation of the extracellular fluid, functions primarily in fluid balance, and osmotic pressure of body fluids. Sodium is also associated with chloride and bicarbonate in facilitating of the acid-base equilibrium of body fluid.
Chloride, the major extracellular anion, works synergistically with sodium, and changes in the acid-base balance of the body are reflected by changes in the chloride concentration.
Treatment should be initiated only by physicians.
