Irinotecan HCL injection is used for the treatment of metastatic cancer of the colon or rectum as a first-line therapy in combination with 5-fluorouracil and leucovorin, or in patients whose disease has progressed or recurred after standard treatment with fluorouracil. Irinotecan may be used alone or in combination with other medications and works by stopping the growth of cancer cells.
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of irinotecan injection. Always consult a doctor or health care professional for medical advice before use. Common side effects include, but may not be limited to nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, constipation, hair loss, weakness, back pain. Seek medical attention if the following develop: chest pain, rash, hives, itching, unusual weight gain, difficulty breathing or swallowing.

Driving or operating machinery should be avoided, as it may cause pain, most likely located in the back.
Do NOT use irinotecan injection if:
- You show any allergy to one of the components of irenotecan HCL injection.
Use of irinotecan during pregnancy or breast feeding is not recommended because it can harm the fetus. Consult your doctor or health care professional before taking irinotecan.
Refer to your doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise. Usual dose for adults is: 125 mg for the first round of the treatment, and 300 mg for the second round.
