Epirubicin Hydrochloride for Injection is an antineoplastic drug used in cancer chemotherapy. This drug is indicated as adjuvant therapy in patients with evidence of axillary node tumor involvement following resection of primary breast cancer. In some circumstances, it may be used instead of doxorubicin.

Epirubicin Hydrochloride is in a class of drugs known as anthracyclines. The active ingredient, Epirubicin, is a topoisomerase II inhibitor that slows or stops the growth of cancer cells in the body.

What is Epirubicin Hydrochloride used for?

It is used to treat breast cancer. It is typically used as adjuvant treatment for patients who have already had surgery to remove a tumor.

How should Epirubicin HCL for Injection be used?

This medication has been manufactured as a powder, which is stored in a vial. The powder is to be prepared into a solution, and after reconstitution, it should be administered by injection into a vein.

As Epirubicin HCL for Injection is a cytotoxic drug, caution should be used when preparing and administering the solution. Goggles, gloves, and protective gowns are recommended.

What dose should be given?

For axillary node positive breast cancer (adjuvant) in patients with pre-existing bone marrow dysfunction, the usual dose is 75mg/m² IV, given on day 1 and 8 of a 21-day cycle for 6 cycles.

For all other patients, the usual dose is 100mg/m² IV, given on day 1 of a 21-day cycle for 6 cycles.

The exact dosage is dependent upon the individual patient and treatment plan. Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from using Epirubicin HCL for Injection.

Some common side effects include, but may not be limited to:

  • pain at the injection place
  • chest pain
  • shortness of breath

  • difficulty in breathing

Precautions

Do NOT use Epirubicin Hydrochloride for Injection if:

  • You are allergic to any of the components within the powder.
  • You suffer from a urinary tract infection.
  • You have an inflammation of the bladder.
  • You have blood in the urine.

There are some known drug interactions with Epirubicin, which can harm the liver, so consult with your doctor about any medications you are taking before your treatment with Epirubicin HCL.

The use of Epirubicin HCL during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not recommended because it may cause birth defects in a fetus and adverse effects in babies. Consult a doctor or healthcare professional before having injections with Epirubicin HCL Powder.
