Carboplatin Injection is an antineoplastic drug used in cancer chemotherapy. It is indicated as a first-line treatment for ovarian cancer. Carboplatin is also used to treat other types of cancer, like small cell lung carcinoma and neuroblastoma, and for the preparation of bone marrow or stem cell transplants.

The active ingredient, Carboplatin, is an alkylating agent. It has been formulated with platinum, which helps slow down or stop the growth of cancer cells. Carboplatin is used both as a monotherapy or as a combination treatment with other medications.

Uses

What is Carboplatin used for?

It is used to treat some types of cancer. It is a first-line treatment for ovarian cancer of epithelial origin and a second-line therapy after other treatments have failed. Carboplatin is also used in the treatment of many other types of cancer, including:

  • carcinoma of the head, neck, and testis
  • neuroblastoma
  • small cell lung carcinoma
  • soft tissue sarcomas
  • some pediatric brain tumors

Carboplatin is also used before bone marrow or stem cell transplants.

How should Carboplatin Injection be used?

This medication has been manufactured as a liquid solution, which is to be given by injection into a vein. It should only be administered by a doctor or healthcare provider.

What dose of Carboplatin should I take?

As monotherapy for advanced ovarian cancer, the usual dose is 360mg/m² IV, given on the first day of a 28-day cycle.

As a combination therapy for advanced ovarian cancer, the usual dose is 300mg/m² IV, given on the first day of a 28-day cycle.

The safety of Carboplatin for children has not been confirmed.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Carboplatin.

Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:

  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • hair loss
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea
  • stomach pain
  • vomiting
  • weakness

Seek medical attention if the following develop:

  • vomiting
  • diarrhea

Precautions

Do NOT use Carboplatin Injection if:

  • You are allergic to any component of carboplatin.
  • You have severe bone marrow depression or severe bleeding problems.

The use of Carboplatin during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be avoided. Carboplatin can be harmful to the baby, so it is recommended not to breastfeed while using carboplatin. Consult a doctor or healthcare professional before taking carboplatin.

Driving or operating machinery should be avoided, as the medicine may cause pain and other side effects.
