Product Information
AdvaCare is a CE, ISO and USFDA manufacturer and global supplier of Gauze Swabs. The StayGuard™ brand of Gauze Swabs are internationally distributed and recognized for reliable quality and exceptional value. With distribution across developed and developing markets alike, our products are uniquely positioned as the brand of choice for medical professionals.
A gauze swab is a piece of square or rectangular dressing, used for cleaning out and protecting minor lesions, wounds, scrapes and abrasions. Swabs are also used to absorb blood and other bodily secretions, and can be used in conjunction with an antibacterial cream or ointment. They are placed directly over the wound.
Sterile gauze swabs can be applied directly to the wound, as they are non-adhesive and sterilized, making it suitable for direct contact.
Swabs are manufactured from 100% cotton, and come in a variety of sizes and thread yarns and meshes. The material that the swabs are made from ensures a high level of absorbency and softness.
Gauze swabs are widely used for both professional and consumer needs, in hospitals, clinics, senior living facilities, schools, and households. They are an essential item for any first aid kit.
Swabs are available as either sterile or non-sterile.
Like most gauze products, gauze swabs are available as either X-ray detectable or undetectable. If an x-ray detectable gauze swab is left in a body cavity, it can easily be identified, located and extracted. In an invasive, surgical setting, the x-ray detectable variant should be used. Devices such as gauze swabs can cause a host of complications if not removed from the body.
The packaging which gives the gauze swab its sterility can expire, so careful examination of the packaging will reveal the date in which the swabs should be discontinued from direct use on an open wound. However, the swabs can still be used for purposes where sterility is not crucial.
Gauze mesh is associated with the density of the cotton that the gauze swabs are made from. A higher mesh count signifies higher density of the gauze. Gauze yarn relates to the fineness (or coarseness) of the swab. An elevated yarn count is indicative of courser threads. Gauze ply refers to the number of layers that compose the gauze swab. Increased ply equates to increased thickness.
Gauze swabs are available in 4 sizes. They will be explored in greater detail below.

Benefits of Gauze Swabs
- Gauze swabs are portable and convenient for use when travelling, and can easily be stored in a first aid kit;
- Gauze swabs are easy to use and need little instruction;
- Numerous sizes and shapes of gauze swabs to choose from. Some wounds are large and need a gauze swab that is sufficiently large so it can effectively absorb the wounds discharge and thoroughly clean the wound. Conversely, a minor wound does not require an excessively large swab, and thus a smaller swab would be suitable. AdvaCare offers gauze swabs in a variety of different sizes to treat wounds of all magnitudes;
- Gauze swabs rapidly absorb fluids expelled by a wound, assisting in the healing process;
- X-ray detectable gauze swabs provide an extra level of safety during a surgical procedure, as they can be identified and located if one is left in a body cavity;
- Because of its non-adhesive properties and sterility, gauze swabs can be directly applied to the wound;
- Gauze swabs are extremely affordable, making it accessible to a wide range of people.
Usage:
Gauze swabs are ideal for absorbing the discharge expelled from cuts, abrasions, blisters, or other injures that may seep blood or other fluids, as well as cleaning out wounds to prepare them for dressing. Gauze swabs assist in accelerating the healing time of injuries.
To apply the swab, ensure the wound is cleaned thoroughly to remove any debris or foreign bodies. Ensure the shape and size of the swab is applicable to the size of the wound that is being treated. The swab can be placed directly onto the wound, as it is not adhesive and sterile. The swab is simply held in place over the wound, allowing it to soak up all the discharge secreted by the wound. If the swab is used to clean the wound, a small volume of disinfectant can be added onto the swab, and the wound can be gently dabbed. Once the swab is saturated, or the wound has stopped discharging fluid(s), the swab can be removed and disposed of. Take care not to touch the wound, as this may aggravate it. Changing the swab frequently is recommended. If the swab gets saturated or soiled, it should be replaced immediately with a fresh swab.
It is imperative that gauze swabs are not used if the packaging or seal is compromised. Evidence of this may suggest tampering or loss of sterility. If one should come across swabs inside compromised packaging, the correct course of action is to dispose of it quickly and safely.
Precautions:
- It is important that gauze swabs are not reused. Once used, the device is not fit to be salvaged for further used, as sterilization cannot be retained. Re-using swabs can result in infections being transmitted;
- Must prepare the swabs for use in a clean, sterile environment, absent of bodily fluids or other sources of contamination;
- Gauze swabs are more suitable to treat relatively minor cuts and lesions. If a wound is more severe, or is bleeding, a stronger, more robust medical device should be used, for example an adhesive bandage, also offered by AdvaCare;
- Gauze swabs should be stored in a clean, dry location that is well ventilated, and not overly humid or hot. Failure to do so may interfere with the swabs absorption and cleaning properties;
- Promptly and safely dispose of any swabs that have touched a potentially contaminated surface;
- If gauze swabs are being used in a surgical operation, sterile, x-ray detectable swabs should be used;
- Swabs have an expiration date. If the swabs are out of date, they should not be used for applications that require a sterile swab. They can only be used for non-sterile applications;
- If swabs have blood or any other bodily substance on it, it must be handled as biohazard waste.

The ranges of gauze swabs offered by AdvaCare are composed of high quality, absorbent, 100% cotton.
