What is Ampicillin + Sulbactam?

Therapeutic Class:
Target Species:

Active Ingredients: Ampicillin Sodium, Sulbactam Sodium

Ampicillin Sodium + Sulbactam Sodium for Injection is an antibiotic used to treat various types of bacterial infections in horses, livestock and companion animals. This medicine can be used as a parenteral alternative to Amoxicillin + Clavulanic Acid or when oral treatment is not possible.

It is also preferable for the treatment of severe infections and prophylaxis. This combination drug contains two active ingredients: Ampicillin Sodium and Sulbactam Sodium.

Ampicillin is a broad-spectrum, beta-lactam penicillin antibiotic. It is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms.

Sulbactam Sodium is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. It works to prevent the action of beta-lactamase, which destroys antibiotics like Ampicillin. Sulbactam is typically only used parenterally due to its poor absorption within the GI tract.

This combination is effective against certain infections caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Escherichia coli, Acinetobacter, Klebsiella, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter, and anaerobes. Depending on the preparation, this drug can be administered through an intramuscular or intravenous route.

It is important to note that this formulation of Ampicillin Sodium + Sulbactam Sodium for Injection is for veterinary purposes only. While AdvaCare Pharma offers many similar products that are available for human use, this particular medication should be prescribed by a veterinary doctor or animal care specialist for an animal.
