Penicillin G sodium is a fast-acting antibiotic that fights bacteria in your body. Penicillin G is a bactericidal that targets penicillin-susceptible microorganisms during the stage of active multiplication. It acts by inhibiting biosynthesis of cell-wall mucopeptide.
Penicillin G is highly active in vitro against staphylococci (except penicillinase-producing strains), streptococci (groups A, C, G, H, L and M), and pneumococci.
Other organisms susceptible to penicillin G are Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Bacillus anthracis, Clostridia, Actinomyces bovis, Streptobacillus moniliformis, Listeria monocytogenes, and Leptospira. Treponema pallidum is extremely susceptible.

Indications and Usage
Penicillin G sodium powder for injection is a β-lactam antibiotic produced by penicillin spp. This medication is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It is also used to prevent infection of the heart (bacterial endocarditis) in patients with certain heart diseases who are having surgery.
This medication is known as a natural penicillin antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Penicillin G sodium is generally used in patients who cannot tolerate penicillin G potassium (e.g., patients with renal impairment). It is also indicated in the treatment of cystic fibrosis.
Contraindications
It is contraindicated in the patients who are hypersensitive towards penicillin G sodium.
Precautions
Do not take penicillin G sodium if:
- You are allergic to penicillin G sodium or have asthma;
- You have been undergoing treatment with other antibiotics.
There is little evidence surrounding use of penicillin G sodium during pregnancy. This drug is excreted in the breast milk, therefore administration of the medication is not advisable. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional before administering the injection.
Administration and Dosage
Refer to your doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. The usual adult dose is 5mega units daily to treat severe infections due to susceptible strains of streptococci, pneumococci, straphylococci, bacteremia, pneumonia, endocarditis, pericarditis, empyema, meningitis, and other severe infections
The usual dosage for pediatric patients is 50,000 to 100,000 units/kg per day given in divided doses every four to six hours.
Interactions
This drug may have possible interactions with other antibiotics when taken at the same time, like bacteriostatic anti-bacterials (i.e., chloramphenicol, erythromycins, sulfonamides or tetracyclines). Use of these drugs should be avoided.

Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include trouble breathing and passing out. Other symptoms include agitation, confusion, asterixis, hallucinations, stupor, coma, multifocal myocionus, seizures, and encephalopathy. Hyperkalemia is also possible. These symptoms should be reported to a medical professional. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical help immediately.
Adverse Reactions
Penicillin is a substance of low toxicity but does possess a significant index of sensitization.
