Cefuroxime powder for injection is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria such as bronchitis, gonorrhea, and infection of the ear, throat, sinuses, urinary tract and skin. Cephalosporin stops or slows the growth of bacterial cells by preventing the bacteria from forming the cell wall that surrounds each cell.

Indications and Usage
Cefuroxime powder for injections are used for the treatment of community-acquired pneumonia, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, complicated urinary tract infections, pyelonephritis soft-tissue infections like cellulitis, erysipelas, wound infections, intra-abdominal infections, prophylaxis against infection in gastrointestinal (including oesophageal), and orthopaedic, cardiovascular and gynaecological surgery.
It is also used in the treatment and prevention of infections caused by anaerobic bacteria.
Contraindications
Cefuroxime is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to cephalosporin antibiotics or any β lactam antibiotics.
Precautions
Do not take cefuroxime powder for injections if:
- You are hypersensitive to any of the ingredients;
- You are undergoing concurrent treatment with potent diuretics or aminoglycosides;
- You have overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms;
- You have intra-abdominal infections;
- You have positive Coomb’s Test associated with the use of cefuroxime.
There is little evidence surrounding the use of cefuroxime during pregnancy or breast feeding, so consult your doctor or healthcare professional before taking cefuroxime.

Administration and Dosage
Refer to your doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise. The usual dose is 750mg three times daily by intramuscular or intravenous injection. To treat severe infection, the dose should be increased to 1.5g three times daily given intravenously.
The usual dosage for infants and children is 30 to 100mg/kg per day given as 3 or 4 divided doses. A dose of 60mg/kg per is appropriate for most infections.
The usual dosage for neonates is 30 to 100mg/kg per day given as 2 or 3 divided doses.
Interactions
Cefuroxime powder for injection can potentially interact with nephrotoxic drugs and loop diuretics. Consult your doctor about any medications you are taking before you begin treatment with cefuroxime injections.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include trouble breathing and passing out. Other symptoms of overdose may include neurological sequelae, convulsions, and coma. These symptoms should be reported to a medical professional. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical help immediately.
Adverse Reactions
