The Discovery of Penicillin Changed the World of Medicine
Because of the development of penicillin, infections that were previously severe and often fatal can now be easily diagnosed and treated.

A Scottish researcher, Sir Alexander Fleming, is credited with the discovery of penicillin. This important milestone for medicine happened in 1928 and has changed the world enormously. The main reason is that penicillin has enabled physicians to treat illnesses such as bacterial endocarditis, meningitis, pneumococcal pneumonia, gonorrhea, and syphilis for the first time in history.

Penicillin made a difference during the first half of the 20th century. The first patient was successfully treated for streptococcal septicemia in the United States in 1942. However, supply was limited and demand was high in the early days of penicillin. Demand for the drug had a sharp increase during World War II due to the infections during the war. Penicillin helped reduce the number of deaths and amputations of troops during World War II. According to records, there were only 400 million units of penicillin readily available in stock. By the time the war ended, drug companies were making billions of units of penicillin to help treat people that had come down with deadly infections.

To date, penicillin has become the most widely used antibiotic in the world.

What Is Penicillin?

Penicillin is a group of antibiotic medicine. Penicillin is among the first medicines to ever be effective against bacterial infections. Since the initial discovery, Penicillin has expanded into various forms of penicillin, each having a specific use and dosage methods. Penicillin prevents peptidoglycan from cross-linking properly in the last stages of bacterial cell wall synthesis. This greatly weakens the cell wall and causes the bacterium to lyse, or burst open, because of osmotic pressure.

Penicillin is bactericidal because it directly kills bacteria. And, since peptidoglycan is not found in human cells, penicillin is selectively toxic and does not harm us when we take it.

Benzathine Benzyl Penicillin and Benzyl Penicillin Sodium are all forms of Penicillin. They are used as antibiotics used for the treatment of various bacterial infections. They are used to treat strep throat, diphtheria, syphilis, and yaws. It is typically given to the patient via injection. Penicillin was patented in 1950. It has been considered one of the most effective and safe medicines in the health system.
