BENEFITS OF KNEE-ANKLE-FOOT ORTHOSIS
- The KAFO enables a patient to expend much less energy for walking and is able to travel longer distances than before;
- The medical equipment is easy to put on and provides a good comfortable fit for the patient.
USAGE
As there are multiple designs of KAFOs, there are a variety of ways to put the brace on. Please consult your orthotist on the best way based on your specific brace.
- First, apply a long cotton sock;
- While sitting on a flat surface, such as a chair or a bed, position the thigh and leg inside the medical equipment;
- Carefully position the heel of the foot at the back and bottom of the foot portion of the brace;
- Pull and fasten the straps on calf and thigh to ensure the foot does not slide while wearing the KAFO;
- Put on a any kindo of a shue, as special shoe is not needed to accommodate the medical equipment;
- Before standing and testing out the KAFO, make sure that the locking mechanism is engaged on the knee if your particular brace features one.
PRECAUTIONS
- A KAFO should always be worn with socks and shoes, to improve comfort in the event of perspiration as the sock acts as a barrier between the skin and brace;
- Wearing the KAFO with dress shoes and sandals is not recommended. The best type of shoe is a basic gym shoe with laces or straps as they will allow adjustability and ease of application;
- If you notice any redness or irritation that does not fade, carefully remove the medical equipment and contact your orthotist immediately.
