Medical Device FDA Regulation & RegistrationMedical Device FDA Regulation & Registration

What FDA regulation is required for medical device compliance?

There is no single FDA regulation that establishes complete medical-device compliance. Requirements are determined by the device’s classification, product code, intended use, manufacturing activities, premarket pathway, and post-market obligations.

Answer

A compliant medical-device program begins with classification. The manufacturer must identify the device’s intended use, indications, technological characteristics, risk class, product code, and applicable classification regulation. This determines whether the device is exempt, requires 510(k) clearance, qualifies for De Novo classification, or requires PMA approval.

Most manufacturers must then assess requirements covering:
• Establishment registration and device listing under 21 CFR Part 807
• Quality management under 21 CFR Part 820
• Labeling under 21 CFR Part 801
• Medical Device Reporting under Part 803
• Corrections and removals under Part 806
• Unique Device Identification under Part 830
• Clinical investigations under Parts 50, 56, and 812, when applicable
• Product-specific special controls and performance standards

Additional obligations may cover cybersecurity, biocompatibility, sterilization, software validation, electrical safety, packaging, shelf life, human factors, radiation safety, or combination-product requirements.

Compliance continues after commercial release. Manufacturers need complaint handling, adverse-event evaluation, nonconformance controls, corrective action, change assessment, supplier controls, traceability, and recall procedures. Design or labeling changes must be assessed to determine whether a new premarket submission is required.

The appropriate output is a product-specific regulatory strategy and compliance matrix—not a generic statement that “FDA registration” or one CFR part has been completed.
