Indications and Usage
Montelukast sodium is indicated in the prevention and treatment of asthma. It is used to treat seasonal and year-round allergies. Montelukast sodium tablets also prevent exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) which results when airways in the lungs narrow during or after exercise.
Do NOT take montelukast sodium if:
- You have a sudden asthma attack;
- You have suicidal thoughts or behaviors;
- You have immune system problems;
- You are allergic to its active ingredients;
- You are allergic to aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs;
- You are below 1 year old.
Administration and Dosage
Use of montelukast sodium tablets during pregnancy or breastfeeding does not appear to be harmful.
Consult your doctor or healthcare professional before taking montelukast sodium. Refer to your doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed the advisable dosage. The usual dose for adults is 10mg taken once daily in the evening. The usual dose for children aged 6 – 14 years is 5mg taken once daily in the evening. The usual dose for children aged 2 – 5years is 4mg chewable tablet taken once daily in the evening depending on age and body weight. Montelukast sodium tablets are not for children younger than 1year.
Possible interactions with montelukast sodium tablets include aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents, certain vitamin supplements and herbs. Montelukast sodium tablets should not be taken with alcohol. Consult with your doctor about any medications you are taking, before your treatment with montelukast sodium tablets.
Taking more medicines may cause poisoning and severe side effects. Please call the emergency department if you suspect a montelukast sodium tablets overdose.
