Metamizole (also known as Dipyrone and branded as Analgin in specific countries) tablets are a non-opioid analgesic and antipyretic medication which belongs to the class of NAISD’s. It is used primarily for the relief of pain and fever.
It is used to treat pain and fever from headache, toothache, arthralgia, neuralgia, high fever, pain after surgeries, and other illnesses that do not respond to other NAISD’s.
Side Effects:

Indications and Usage
Metamizole belongs to the class of analgesics. It is indicated in the treatment of severe post-traumatic or post-operative pain.
Metamizole sodium tablets are also used for the treatment of respiratory, gastroenteritic and urogenital diseases, such as asthma and pneumonia. This medication is effective in blood poisoning and pyogenic dermatitis.
The mechanism of action is based on the inhibition of central cyclooxygenase-3 and on the activation of cannabinoid and opiodergic system.
Contraindications
Metamizole is contraindicated in patients with a deficiency of glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase, severe hepatic insufficiency, severe renal insufficiency and acute intermittent porphyria.
Precautions
Do NOT use metamizole sodium tablet if you:
- Have hypersensitivity towards metamizole sodium tablet or any of the excipients in the tablet;
- Are younger than 18 years of age;
- You suffer from low blood pressure or hypotension.
Use of metamizole sodium tablet during pregnancy or breast feeding should be avoided. This medication passes into breast milk and can lead to delirious effect in the nursing infant. Consult your doctor before taking this medication or before breast-feeding.
Driving or operating machinery has no affect your ability to drive especially if you are taking it for the first time or if your doctor changes the dose.
Administration and Dosage
Refer to your doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise. Usual recommended dose for adults is: 500mg 3-4 times a day. The maximum dosage is 4000mg.
Interactions
Metamizole sodium may interact with drugs such as anticoagulants, antibiotics, sedatives and hypotonics.
Overdose
If someone overdoses might have symptoms nausea, vomiting, seizures, dizziness, coma, mydriasis, liver damage, kidney damage, breathlessness or passing out. This has to be reported to the medical health professional. Seek medical help urgently.
Adverse Reactions
Some of the reported adverse reactions by metamizole sodium may be abdominal discomfort, maculopapular rash, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Lyell syndrome, agranulocytosis, hypotension, bronchospasm, arrhythmia and other allergic reactions.
