Fenofibrate is a fibric acid derivative. It acts by increasing the breakdown and removal of bad cholesterol from your body.
This action reduces the risk of cholesterol build-up in the blood vessels. This build-up causes serious health problems like heart attack, stroke and other dangerous cardiac diseases.
Fenofibrate facilitates the elimination of bad cholesterol from the body.
It is excreted in urine in the form of metabolites, with 25% being excreted in the feces.
Side Effects:
As with all pharmaceutical medicines, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of fenofibrate tablets.
Always consult a physician for medical advice before use.
Common side effects may include headache, back pain, nausea, runny nose, and indigestion.

Indications and Usage
Fenofibrate improves cholesterol levels in three types of cholesterol problems.
It is used in mixed dyslipidemia, severe hypertriglyceridemia, and primary hypercholesterolemia.
Fenofibrate generally lowers high levels of harmful cholesterol; it also helps increase levels of HDL (good) cholesterol.
Administration and Dosage
Use of fenofibrate tablets during pregnancy or breastfeeding is harmful. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional before taking fenofibrate.
Refer to your doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed the advisable dosage.
The usual dose for adults is 40 – 160mg taken per day.
It is not for children younger than 18 years.
Interactions
Possible interactions with fenofibrate tablets include blood thinning medications, cholesterol drugs, diabetes drugs, gout drugs, immunosuppressants, and some herbs.
Fenofibrate tablets should not be taken with alcohol. Consult with your doctor about any medications you are taking, before your treatment with fenofibrate tablets.
Overdose
Taking more medicines may cause poisoning and serious side effects. Please call the emergency department if you suspect fenofibrate tablets overdose.
Adverse Reactions and Precautions
Do NOT take fenofibrate if:
- You have muscle pain or severe muscle problems
- You are at risk of liver damage
- You have gallstones or at increased risk
- You have pancreatitis
- You are allergic to its active ingredients
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
