What is Docetaxel?

Docetaxel Injection is an antineoplastic drug used in cancer chemotherapy. It is indicated for the treatment of many types of cancer, including breast, ovarian, and non-small cell lung cancer. Docetaxel Injection may be used alone or in combination with other anticancer medications.
Docetaxel Injection is in the class of medicine called taxanes, which are conventionally used to treat breast cancer. The active ingredient, Docetaxel, is an antineoplastic agent with antimitotic abilities. It works by stopping the growth and spread of cancer cells.

What is Docetaxel used for?
It is used to treat various types of cancer, including:
- breast cancer
- head and neck cancers
- lung cancer
- non-small cell lung cancer
- ovarian cancer
- prostate cancer
- stomach cancer
How should Docetaxel Injection be used?
This medication has been manufactured as a powder, which is stored in a vial. The powder is to be prepared into a solution, and after reconstitution, it should be administered by injection into a vein.
As Docetaxel Injection is a cytotoxic drug, caution should be used when preparing and administering the solution. Goggles, gloves, and protective gowns are recommended.
What dose should be given?
For node-positive breast cancer (adjuvant), the usual dose is 75mg/m² IV, given on day 1 of a 21-day cycle for 6 cycles.
For metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer, the usual dose is 75mg/m² IV, given on day 1 of a 21-day cycle, given up to 10 cycles. Prednisone is typically prescribed alongside this treatment.
Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise. The usual dose for adults depends on the patient's weight and general condition.
Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Docetaxel Injection.
Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:
- burning sensation in the arms, hands, legs, or feet
- unusual tiredness
- weight gain
Seek medical attention if the following develop:
- chest pain
- decreased blood pressure
- irregular heartbeat
- increased blood pressure

Precautions
Do NOT use Docetaxel Injection if:
- You are allergic to any of the components within the powder.
- You have any allergy to a component of Docetaxel.
- You have severe liver disease.
- You have a low number of white blood cells.
There is little evidence with regards to the use of Docetaxel during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so consult a doctor or healthcare professional before having injections with Docetaxel Powder.
Consult with your doctor about any medications you are taking before your treatment with Docetaxel.
Driving or operating machinery is okay, as the medication should not cause dizziness or drowsiness.
