Indications and Usage
It is indicated in case of urinary infection, otitis media, bronchitis and intestinal infection where the single antibiotic result less effective than the combination of two (Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole)inside co-trimoxazole.
Do not take co-trimoxaloe if:
- You are allergic to sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim or any of the other ingredients inside the tablet or derivate compounds from the same class (sulphonamides, thiazide );
- You have liver and biliary tract problems;
- You have severe renal insufficiency.
Co-trimoxazole is not suitable for children under 12 years old.
The use of co-trimoxazole if you are pregnant or breastfeeding should be avoided because co-trimoxazole passes into breast milk and there is a risk of developing fetal abnormalities.
Administration and Dosage
This dosage approximates to 6 mg trimethoprim and 30 mg sulfamethoxazole per kg body weight per 24 hours. The therapy should continue at least for 5 days, and not more than 7 days, refer to your doctor if the patient is still asymptomatic.
Usual dose for adults and children over 12 years old is: 2 tablets every 12 hours.
This dosage approximates to 6 mg trimethoprim and 30 mg sulfamethoxazole per kilogram body weight per 24 hours. The therapy should continue at least for 5 days, and not more than 7 days, after that if the symptoms are not passed refer to your doctor.
Co-trimoxazole tablets should not be taken with alcohol. Consult with your doctor about any medications you are taking, before your treatment with co-trimoxazole tablets.
If someone is overdosed might have symptoms of breathlessness or passing out. These symptoms have to be reported to the medical health professional and seek a medical help urgently.
