Indications and Usage
Clarithromycin is indicated in the treatment for various infections such as: pharyngitis/tonsillitis due to Streptococcus pyogenes, acute maxillary sinusitis due to Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, or Streptococcus pneumonia, acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis due to Haemophilus influenzae, Haemophilus parainfluenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, or Streptococcus pneumonia, uncomplicated skin and skin structure infections due to Staphylococcus aureus, or Streptococcus pyogenes In children, it is indicated in the treatment of infections such as: acute otitis media due to Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, or Streptococcus pneumonia and community-acquired pneumonia due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, or Chlamydophila pneumoniae (TWAR).
This medication can also be used in combination with anti-ulcer medications to treat certain types of stomach ulcers.
This antibiotic treats only bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (such as common cold, flu). Unnecessary use or misuse of any antibiotic can lead to its decreased effectiveness.
Clarithromycin tablets are contraindicated whenever co-administered with pimozide, cisapride, ergotamine, and dihydroergotamine.
Do NOT use clarithromycin tablet if you:
- Are allergic to any ingredient in clarithromycin tablets;
- Have ever had jaundice or liver problems caused by taking clarothromycin;
- Have liver or kidney disease.
Use of clarithromycin tablet during pregnancy or breast feeding is only recommended if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Consult your doctor or health care professional before taking clarithromycin tablets.
This medication passes into breast milk but is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before taking this medication or before breast-feeding.
Driving or operating machinery should be avoided unless you are sure about how you will react to it.
Administration and Dosage
Refer to your doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.
- Usual dose for adults is: 500mg orally every 12 hours for 14 days;
- Usual dose for children is: 7.5 to 15mg/kg orally twice a day.
Clarithromycin may interact with the following medications: amiodarone, dofetilide, pimozide, procainamide, quinidine, sotalo.
