        General Information:
        AdvaCare is a GMP manufacturer of Captopril tablet.

        Captopril Tablet is an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor (ACE inhibitor) used for the treatment of hypertension and some types of congestive heart failure. Captopril tablet is indicated for use in the treatment of mild to moderate hypertension in adult patients. Captopril tablet may be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents especially thiazide diuretics. The hypotensive effects of Captopril and thiazides are additive. Captopril tablet is indicated in the treatment of congestive heart failure usually in combination with diuretics and digitalis.

        The beneficial effect of captopril in heart failure does not require the presence of digitalis; however, most controlled clinical trial experience with captopril has been in patients receiving digitalis, as well as diuretic treatment.

        Captopril tablet can be taken with or without food. Moderate amounts of alcohol will not affect Captopril, however, you should check with your doctor first to see if drinking is advisable for you.

        Side Effects:
        As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of captopril tablet. Always consult a doctor or health care professional for medical advice before use. Common side effects include, but may not be limited to a cough and skin rash.

        Seek medical attention if the following develop:

        • Chest pain;
        • Cloudy urine;
        • Fast, pounding, or irregular heartbeat or pulse;
        • Bloody urine;
        • Decreased blood pressure.

        Indications and Usage

        Captopril belongs to the class of ACE inhibitors which is indicated in the treatment of hypertension and heart failure. It also increases the survival rate and reduces the risk of heart failure after a heart attack in patients a heart condition called left ventricular hypertrophy (enlargement of the walls of the left side of the heart).

        Captopril is also used in the treatment of kidney disease (nephropathy) caused by diabetes in patients with type 1 diabetes and retinopathy.

        Captopril also decreases certain chemicals that tighten the blood vessels, so there is normal blood pressure and heart can pump blood more efficiently.

        Contraindications

        Captopril tablets are contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to this product or any other angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor.

        Precautions

        Do NOT use captopril tablet if you have:

        • Hypersensitivity towards captopril or any other ACE inhibitors or any of the excipients in the tablet;
        • A history of angioedema associated with previous ACE inhibitor therapy;
        • A hereditary of idiopathic angioneutotic edema;
        • Diabetes mellitus or renal impairment.

        Use of captopril tablet during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be avoided Captopril must not be taken during the first and second trimester of the pregnancy as it can lead to growth retardation in the unborn baby.

        This medication passes into breast milk but is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before taking this medication or before breast-feeding.

        Driving or operating machinery should be avoided because it can affect your ability to drive especially if you are taking it for the first time or if your doctor changes the dose.

        Administration and Dosage

        Refer to your doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise. Usual dose for adults is:

        • For high blood pressure: 12.5mg-25mg twice a day;
        • In heart failure: The usual starting dose is 6.25mg-12.5mg two or three times per day;
        • After a heart attack: The usual starting dose is 6.25mg;
        • For the treatment of diabetic patients with kidney disease: The usual dose is 75-100mg per day.

        The usual dose for children is worked out on the basis of a child’s weight in kilograms. The starting dose is 0.3mg per kg body weight per day.

        Interactions

        There are 80 major drugs that are known to interact with captopril like all types of medications containing aliskiren.

        Overdose

        If someone has overdosed might have symptoms of severe dizziness, fainting, fast heartbeat, hypotension breathlessness or passing out. This has to be reported to the medical health professional and seek medical help urgently.

        Adverse Reactions
