What is Bleomycin Sulfate?

Therapeutic Class:

Active Ingredients: Bleomycin Sulfate

Bleomycin Sulfate for Injection is an antineoplastic drug used to treat cancer. It is indicated for palliative treatment of Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, testicular carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinomas (head, neck, penis, cervix, vulva). It can be used alone or with other medications.

The active ingredient, Bleomycin Sulfate, is a mixture of cytotoxic glycopeptide antibiotics that have been isolated from a strain of Streptomyces verticillus. Bleomycin has antitumor and antineoplastic abilities that damage a cell's DNA and, therefore, may kill cancer cells. It is also effective as a sclerosing agent for the treatment of malignant pleural effusion and prevention of recurrent pleural effusions (build-up of fluid around the lungs).
