Product Information
AdvaCare is a CE, ISO and USFDA manufacturer of Urinary Bags.
A urinary bag is a medical device that serves as a collection reservoir for urine that is drained using a catheter. The bag is connected directly to the catheter, and temporarily stores the contents that is tapped out by the catheter. Catheters, and by extension urinary bags, are mainly employed by patients who suffer from urinary incontinence, retention or other conditions which impacts the regular flow and passage of urine.
People who struggle to urinate unassisted, suffer from severe incontinence or patients that need consistent and frequent measurements of their urine taken are other predominant receipients for this product.
Bags are composed from medical-standard PVC, completely free of latex and sterilized, to ensure patients do not develop infections such as urinary tract infection (UTI).
The bag is comprised of 3 main features; an anti-reflux valve, a urine meter and a needless sampling port.
The urinary bags offered in the AdvaCare range come in 2 forms, the Hanging Drainage Bag and the Leg Mounted Bag. The drainage bags are large, and are manufactured to contain large volumes of urine. They are normally used at night where large amounts of urine is produced throughout the night, and are useful for incontinent patients who lack sleep due to constantly needing to use the bathroom. The Drainage bag provides these patients with a comfortable, restful sleep. They are also suited to patients who are confined to their beds due to injury, trauma or coma.
There are 3 models offered in the hanging urinary bag range – economy, deluxe and deluxe meter. Economy bags are the most cheapest, however is not available in the larger volume sizes like the deluxe models. However, they are fitted with all the necessary equipment such as an adaptor with cap and an anti-reflux valve. The deluxe models are more expensive, however are avialble in larger sizes. They are also fitted with a double hook and rope, to ensure hanging apparatus is secured. Unlike the economy model, they are equipped with an anti-reflux drip chamber. The deluxe meter model is distinguished from the standard deluxe model in that it is equipped with a urine meter. It is also available in the maximum volume capacity, at 2600mL.
The Leg Mounted Bags hold smaller volumes of urine, and as the name suggests, are mounted on the leg. This enables free mobility instead of being restricted to sedentary urine draining, as seen when using the hanging drainage bag. The leg mounted bags allows incontinent patients and patients with related conditions to go about their daily duties and schedules, free of worry.
The AdvaCare range of urinary bags cater to patients who are mobile and immobile, and are designed with careful consideration for each lifestyle.
Urinary bags can be fitted with numerous valves, including a push-pull valve, rollover valve, screw (twist) valve, or a T (cross) valve. Valves mediate the flow, entry and exit of the liquid contents of the bag. Selection should be based on the patietns preference and the doctors recommendation.
Urinary bags are offered in transparent or white PVC. They are available as sterile and non-sterile.
Urinary tract infection (UTI) has a high chance of developing if a catheter and therefore by extension a urinary bag is used, as it eases bacteria navigation of the bladder and urinary tract. Symptoms of UTI include pain situated in the abdomen, fever and/or chills.
The cather attached to the urinary bag have the tendency to become clogged, and if this occurs, it must be flushed out or discarded. A clogged cather inhibits drainage, which results in leakage. If a catheter becomes clogged, the urinary bag should also be flushed out and cleased, or simply replaced.
Due to production of urinary bags located in China, low prices can be maintained, whilst still maintaining a superior level of quality.

Benefits of Urinary Bags

- Relatively inexpensive;
- Materials used are completely free of latex, meaning anyone can use the product, even those with a latex allergy;
- Leg-Mounted bags make it possible for use during the day, enabling the patient to go about their daily lives without having to worry about their incontinence;
- Bags are reusable – however, cleaning instructions that come included should be followed closely;
- Leg-Mounted bag can be concealed when in public.
Usage
Before a urinary bag can be used, it is important to select the right type for the patient. A patient who is bed ridden should use the hanging bag. Patients at night should also use the hanging bag, as it holds a larger volume of urine to contain all the urine produced throughout the night. Patients who are mobile and active throughout the day should use the leg-mounted bag.
Before the bag can be prepared for use, hands should be thoroughly washed to avoid any transmission of infectious or contaminated material. Once complete, the old contents of the bag should be drained. Disconnect the catheter by twisting it, and then pinch the rubber tubing to ensure urine does not leak out. Hold tubing over the toilet, allowing contents to drain out. Once contetns have drained, prepare the new bag to be attached. If mobile, the leg-mounted bag should be connected. If about to go to bed, the hanging bag is required. Remove the coating from the tip of the drainage tube of the urinary bag, and clean the tip with alchohol swabs to ensure it is sterilized. Connect the urinary bag tubing to the catheter.
If attaching the leg-mounted bag, the straps of the bag should be fastended to the upper thigh. The bag should be fortified by additional taping to the leg, to ensure it does not loosen and become unattached. Care should be taken to ensure bag is not strapped on too tightly, as to not cut off circulation in leg. A small amount of slack should be allowed in the tubing to alleviate stress on the bladder and urethra.
It is important to clean the bag properly and frequently. The hanging bag should be cleaned every morning, and the leg-mounted bag every evening. To clean the bag: wash hands thoroughly. Fill the bag with with a solution in a ratio of 2:3 vinegar to water. Close the bag, and shake the bag gently. Allow the solution to sit in the bag for 20 minutes. Once this time has elapsed, hang the bag bottom spout down to allow it to dry.
The bag must be emptied before it is completely full, as it can impede the flow of urine within the urethra. Empty bag at least twice a day, when it is approximetly half full.
It is imperative that the urinary bag is not used if the packaging or seal is compromised. Evidence of this may suggest tampering or contamination. If one should come across bags inside comprised packaging, the correct course of action is to dispose of it quickly and safely.
Precautions
- It is of utmost importance that urinary bags that have not been properly flushed and cleansed are not reused. Once used, the device is not fit to be salvaged for further used unless it is properly cleaned out. Reusing uncleaned bags increases the risk of contracting a urinary tract infection or related conditions;
- Must prepare the urinary bag for use in a clean, sterile environment, absent of bodily fluids or other sources of contamination;
- Promptly and safely dispose of any urinary bags that have touched a potentially contaminated surface;
- Correct bag must be selected according to the wearers circumstances – individuals who are expected to be mobile should opt for the leg-mounted bag, and individuals who are about to go to bed must wear the hanging drainage bag;
- In the event of a clogged catheter, the urinary bag must be flushed out thoroughly to be re-used or simply replaced with a new bag;
- Urinary bag should always be emptied before it is completely full, the optimal time being about when it is half full. Failure to do so may result in the urethra being backed up;
- Urinary tract infections are the most common side effect of using a catheter and urinary bag. If symptoms develop, the doctors advice should be sought after;
- It is vital that the urinary bag, regardless of type, is cleaned on a regular basis. Bags suspected of being faulty must be changed immediately. Failure to do so will likely result in a urinary tract infection.
