What are the four types of IV sets?

Four common IV-set categories are macrodrip gravity sets, microdrip gravity sets, burette or volume-control sets, and pump-compatible administration sets. Classification varies among manufacturers, and specialized blood, filtered, or light-protective sets may form additional categories.

Answer

IV sets transfer fluids, medicines, blood-compatible solutions, or nutrition from a container to a patient’s vascular-access device. Although no universal system limits IV sets to four types, procurement teams frequently use four functional categories.

1. Macrodrip gravity sets: These provide relatively large drops and are widely used for routine adult fluid and medication administration. Common factors include 10, 15, or 20 drops per milliliter.
2. Microdrip gravity sets: These typically deliver 60 drops per milliliter, supporting finer manual flow control for pediatric patients or low-volume infusions.
3. Burette or volume-control sets: A calibrated chamber limits the amount of fluid available for infusion, making these sets useful when precise volume restriction is required.
4. Pump-compatible administration sets: These are designed and validated for a specific infusion-pump mechanism. They may incorporate dedicated pumping segments, anti-free-flow features, filters, or specialized connectors.

Additional configurations include vented and non-vented sets, primary and secondary sets, blood-transfusion sets, filtered sets, extension sets, DEHP-free tubing, needle-free access ports, and amber or opaque tubing for light-sensitive medicines.

Selection depends on the solution container, required flow rate, medication, patient population, pump compatibility, filtration, connector type, and local protocol. A pump set should never be selected solely by appearance because dimensions and materials can affect delivery accuracy. Gravity sets must clearly display their calibrated drop factor on the packaging.
