Amoxicillin + clavulanic acid tablets are a penicillin-like antibiotic used to treat several different types of infection caused by bacteria, such as tonsillitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, gonorrhea, and infections of the ear, nose, throat, skin, or urinary tract. Its action consists in stopping the growth of bacteria.

Clavulanic acid is a powerful inhibitor of many beta-lactamase enzymes in penicillin-resistant organisms, it combines its action with the amoxicillin to enhance and broaden the spectrum of the penicillins.

The combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid comes as a tablet in different dosages, it should be taken after a snack or meal and not less than 8 hours after the previous intake. With the right dosage, it is also well tolerated by pediatric patients.

Continue to take it for all the prescription length even if the symptoms disappeared.

Side Effects:

Indications and Usage

It works by preventing bacteria from destroying amoxicillin. This combination of antibiotic will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections.

Amoxicillin and clavulanic acid is also used sometimes to treat certain sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Talk to your doctor about the possible risks of using this medication for your condition.

The combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid comes in different dosages and in the form of tablet, It is always recommended to consume the tablet after a light snack or meal and not less than 8 hours after the previous intake.


Do not take amxocillin + clavulanic acid if:

  • You are allergic to amoxicillin + clavulanic acid, penicillin, cephalosporins, or any other medications;
  • You have or ever had kidney or liver disease, allergies, asthma, hay fever, hives, or mononucleosis;
  • You are consuming oral contraceptives and should be aware of the fact that amoxicillin and clavulanic acid may decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives (birth control pills);
  • You are diabetic; test your urine for sugar while taking this medication;
  • You are pregnant or plan to become pregnant or breastfeeding. Consultation with a medical health care practitioner is always advisable.
Administration and Dosage

  • Adults and children (>40kg or more): 500mg/125mg: 1 tablet 3 times a day; 875mg/125mg: 1 tablet 2/3 times a day (follow the prescription);
  • Children < 40kg (it is better to use oral suspension or syrup for children under 6 years old) – consult with your doctor.

With the right dosage, it is also well tolerated by pediatric patients.

Possible interactions include but are not limited to: Arava, Cholera vaccine, Folex PFS, Juxtapid, and Kynamro. Consult with your doctor about any medications you are taking, before your treatment with amoxicillin and clavulanic acid.


If someone is overdosed might have symptoms of breathlessness or passing out. Other symptoms of overdose may include: diarrhea, vomiting, rash, hyperactivity and drowsiness. These symptoms have to be reported to the medical health professional and seek a medical help urgently.
