Erythromycin belongs to the class of medications known as macrolide antibiotics. It a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat infections caused by certain types of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and other infectious agents.

Erythromycin estolate tablets are effective against Streptococcus pneumoniae, S. pyogenes (group A beta-hemolytic streptococci), and Staphylococcus aureus. It is also used against certain gram-negative bacteria, including Legionella pneumophila, Campylobacter jejuni, Bordetella pertussis and Haemophilus influenza.

Erythromycin can be also used to treat bronchitis, otitis, and sinusitis.
