Indications and Usage
Simvastatin belongs to a group of drugs known as HMGCoA reductatse inhibitors, or statins. It helps in reducing the bad cholesterol and increasing the good cholesterol. It is also used to lower the tyglycerides in the blood.
Simvastatin is used to reduce the risk of stroke, heart problems such as congestive heart disease, heart attack and other heart complications with diabetes, obesity and other metabolic disorders.
This drug is contraindicated with patients hypersensitive towards simvastatin or any other excipients. It is also contraindicated in patients having liver diseases.
Do NOT use simvastatin tablet if:
- You are allergic to simvastatin;
- Younger than 10 years of age;
- Have a history of kidney disease, diabetes, thyroid disorder, a descent of Chinese origin;
- You drink more than 2 alcoholic beverages daily.
Simvastatin may harm an unborn baby so administration of this medication during pregnancy is not recommended. Therefore, it is important to prevent pregnancy while taking this medication. This medication is also not required during breast feeding because of the possible risk to the infant.
Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how simvastatin tablets affect you.
Administration and Dosage
Refer to your doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise. Usual dosage for adults is: 5-40mg a day.
Possible interactions include blood thinner medications, cyclosporine, danazol, and gemfibrozil. It also has interacted with some of the food consumption such as grapefruit juice and alcohol beverages.
Consult with your doctor about any medications you are taking, before your treatment with simvastatin tablets.
If someone is overdosed breathlessness or passing out. This has to be reported to the medical health professional and seek a medical help urgently.
