Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking nitrofurantoin tablets. If your condition does not improve or becomes worse, then call your doctor. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how nitrofurantoin tablets affect you.
Do NOT use nitrofurantoin tablets for:
- Infants less than 1 month of age;
- People allergic to ingredients;
- Women in the last 2-4 weeks of pregnancy.
Nitrofurantoin tablets should only be used when clearly needed during pregnancy and it passes into breast milk and may have undesirable effects on infants less than 1 month old. Consult your doctor or health care professional before taking nitrofurantoin tablets.
Refer to your doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise. Usual dose for adults is: for treating Cystitis, 50-100mg 4 times daily for 1 week or 100mg twice a day for 7 days. For treating Cystitis Prophylaxis, 50-100mg orally once daily at bedtime. Usual does for children is: for Cystitis, 5-7mg/kg/day orally in 4 divided doses or, if greater than 12 years of age, 100mg twice daily for 7 days. For Cystitis Prophylaxis, 1-2mg/kg/day up to 100mg/day orally in 1-2 divided doses.
Possible interactions include sulfinpyrazone and birth control. Consult with your doctor about any medications you are taking, before your treatment with nitrofurantoin tablets.
