Benzathine benzyl penicillin powder for injections is a prescription medication used to treat bacteria that cause infections of the upper respiratory tract, heart valves, joints, skin, brain, and the genital areas. Benzathine Benzyl Penicillin belongs to a group of drugs called penicillin antibiotics, which help stop the growth of bacteria. Specifically, it is to treat strep throat, diphtheria, syphilis, and yaws. It is also used to prevent rheumatic fever.
This medication is available in an injectable form to be given directly into a muscle (IM) an antibiotic and works by killing bacteria that cause infections.
Benzathine benzyl penicillin is a natural substance derived from Penicillium notatum. It consists of a thiazolidine ring connected to a beta-lactam ring. It is bactericidal against streptococci, Neisseria, many anaerobes, and spirochaetes.
After intramuscular injection, peak plasma concentrations are usually reached within 12-24 hours and are usually detectable for 1- 4 weeks. It is widely distributed throughout the body and is excreted mainly in the urine
