Indications and Usage
Chloramphenicol sodium succinate powder for injections is indicated in the treatment of acute infection caused by salmonella typhi. It is also used in the treatment of infections caused by the salmonella species, H influenza, rickettsia, lymphogranuloma-psittacosis group, various gram-negative bacteria-causing bacteremias, meningitis or other serious gram-negative infections, and in other susceptible organisms which have been demonstrated to be resistant to all appropriate antimicrobial agents.
It is also indicated in the treatment of cystic fibrosis.
It is contraindicated in the patients who are hypersensitive to chloramphenicol sodium succinate. It is also contraindicated in patients who have any infection such as colds, influenza, infections of the throat, and bacterial infections due to prophylaxis.
Do not take chloramphenicol sodium succinate if:
- You are allergic to chloramphenicol sodium succinate;
- You have impaired kidney function;
- You have been undergoing treatment with other antibiotics.
There is little evidence surrounding the use of chloramphenicol sodium succinate during pregnancy. This drug is excreted in the breast milk therefore administration of the medication is not advisable. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional before administering the injection.
Administration and Dosage
Refer to your doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. The usual dosage for adults is 50mg/kg per day in divided doses at 6-hour intervals.
The usual dosage for pediatric patients is 50mg/kg per day divided into 4 doses at 6-hour intervals.
This drug may have possible interactions with other antibiotics when taken at the same time.

Symptoms of overdose include trouble breathing and passing out. These symptoms should be reported to a medical professional. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical help immediately.
Serious adverse effects from the use of chloramphenicol include bone marrow depression, serious and fatal blood dyscrasias aplastic anemia, hypoplastic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and granulocytopenia.
