Cefotaxime is used to treat and prevent bacterial infections such as pneumonia and some lower respiratory tract infections, gonorrhea, meningitis and other brain and spinal infections. Cefotaxime does not work for colds or other viral infections. Cefotaxime might be also used to prevent infections from certain surgeries. It belongs to a class of antibiotics called cephalosporins.
