What is Fluconazole?
Active Ingredients: Fluconazole
Fluconazole Capsules are a drug used to treat and prevent superficial and systemic fungal infections. It's indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of fungal infections where other antifungals have failed or are not tolerated. This drug is also used to prevent fungal infection in immunocompromised patients.
Fluconazole belongs to a class of drugs known as azole antifungals. It is in the subgroup triazole, which is indicated to treat systemic infections. The active ingredient, Fluconazole, works by stopping the fungi from producing ergosterol, an essential substance for the fungal cell membrane.

Uses
What is Fluconazole used for?
It's used to treat and prevent certain fungal infections, particularly ones caused by Candida species. This drug can be used to prevent candidiasis in patients with weak immune systems caused by cancer treatment, bone marrow transplant, or diseases such as AIDS.
Fluconazole is also used as a second-line treatment for cryptococcal meningitis.
How are Fluconazole Capsules used?
This medication has been manufactured to be taken orally. It should be taken once a day, with or without a meal.
What dose should be taken?
For oropharyngeal candidiasis, the usual dose is 200mg on the first day, and then 100mg, taken twice per day. The duration of treatment should be at least 2 weeks.
For esophageal candidiasis, the usual dose is 200mg on the first day, and then 100mg, taken twice per day. The duration of treatment should be at least 3 weeks and continue for 2 weeks after the symptoms have subsided.
For cryptococcal meningitis, the usual dose is 400mg on the first day, and then 200mg, taken twice per day. The duration of treatment should continue at least 10 to 12 weeks after cerebrospinal fluid cultures show negative.
For uncomplicated vaginal candidiasis, the usual dose is 150mg as a single dose. For complicated infections, the usual dose is 150mg, taken every 72 hours for three doses.
For urinary tract infections or peritonitis caused by Candida, the usual dose is 50-200mg, taken twice per day.
The exact dosage is dependent on a patient's medical condition, response to the treatment, age, and weight. Refer to a doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise.
Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Fluconazole Capsules.
Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:
- headache
- stomach discomfort
- vomiting
- diarrhea
Seek medical attention if the following develop:
- sudden wheezing
- severe skin reactions
- itching all over the body
- loss of appetite or weight loss

Precautions
Do NOT use Fluconazole Capsules if:
- You are allergic to Fluconazole or any other antifungal medicine.
- You are taking astemizole or terfenadine.
- You are taking cisapride.
- You are taking pimozide.
- You are taking erythromycin.
- You are taking quinidine.
Alcohol should be avoided, as it may worsen the adverse effects caused by Fluconazole.
There are known potential drug interactions with Fluconazole. Consult with a doctor about any current medications before treatment with Fluconazole.
