General Information:
Irinotecan powder for injections is used for the treatment of metastatic cancer of the colon or rectum in first-line therapy in combination with 5-fluorouracil and leucovorin. It can also be used in patients whose disease has progressed or recurred after standard treatment with fluorouracil. The drug works by stopping the growth of cancer cells and can be used alone or in combination with other medications.

Side Effects:
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of irinotecan powder for injection. Always consult a doctor or health care professional for medical advice before use. Common side effects include, but may not be limited to diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, constipation, anemia, asthenia, abdominal pain, fever, loss of weight, alopecia, and insomnia. Seek medical attention if the following develop: stomatitis, ulcers, unusual bleeding.

Do NOT use irinotecan powder for injection if:

  • You are hypersensitive to any component within the powder.

There is little evidence with regards to the use of irinotecan during pregnancy or breast feeding, and so consult your doctor or health care professional before using irinotecan.

Refer to your doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise. Usual dose for adults and children depends on the type of cancer, its cycle and other general factors.

The use of irinotecan can reduce the effect of anticonvulsants, and patients taking St. John’s Wort should stop their treatment two weeks before taking an irinotecan powder for injection. Consult with your doctor about any medications you are taking, as well as your medical history, before your treatment with irinotecan powder for injection.
