Product Information

General Information:
Artemether tablets are an antimalarial manufactured for the treatment of multi-drug resistant strains of falciparum malaria both in adults and children, where there is multi-drug resistance. The active ingredient is artemether, which is highly effective against the blood schizonts of both malarial parasites P. falciparum and P. vivax. It has been shown to also have significant anticancer and antitumor activities in patients with advanced and metastatic cancer.

Side Effects:
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of artemether tablets. Always consult a doctor or health care professional for medical advice before use. Common side effects include, but may not be limited to abdominal or stomach pain, chills, cough, fast heartbeat, fever, headache, muscle aches and pale skin. Seek medical attention if the following develop: accumulation of pus, bloody or cloudy urine, chest pain, convulsions, diarrhea, dizziness, nausea or vomiting.

Do NOT use artemether tablets if:

  • You have low blood potassium or magnesium levels, a very slow heartbeat, or severe heart problems.
  • You have a history of certain type of irregular heartbeat or you take any medicine that may increase the risk of this type of irregular heartbeat.
  • A family member has a history of QT prolongation or sudden death.
  • You are taking carbamazepine, efabirenz, enzalutamide, hydantoins, nevirapine, phenobarbital, primidone, rifamycins, or St. John’s wort.
  • You have taken or will be taking halofantrine within 30 days before or after using artemether.

Use of artemether tablets during pregnancy or breast feeding is not recommended. Consult your doctor or health care professional before taking artemether tablets.

Refer to your doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage. Do not exceed what they advise. Usual dose for adults is: 4 tablets as single initial dose, followed by 4 tablets after 8 hours, and then 4 tablets twice a day (morning and evening) for the following 2 days (total course: 24 tablets). Usual does for children is: 5 kg to less than 15 kg: 1 tablet as single initial dose, followed by 1 tablet after 8 hours, and then 1 tablet twice a day (morning and evening) for the following 2 days (total course: 6 tablets); 15 kg to less than 25 kg: 2 tablets as single initial dose, followed by 2 tablets after 8 hours, and then 2 tablets twice a day (morning and evening) for the following 2 days (total course: 12 tablets); 25 kg to less than 35 kg: 3 tablets as single initial dose, followed by 3 tablets after 8 hours, and then 3 tablets twice a day (morning and evening) for the following 2 days (total course: 18 tablets).
