Metoclopramide Oral Suspension is a drug used to treat symptoms, like heartburn, associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is also indicated for the treatment of acute and recurrent gastroparesis in patients with diabetes. Metoclopramide is recommended for adults and children over 1-year-old.
Metoclopramide is classified as a prokinetic agent and dopamine antagonist. It works by increasing muscle contractions in the upper digestive system.

Uses
What is Metoclopramide used for?
It's used to treat GERD and diabetic gastroparesis.
How is Metoclopramide Oral Suspension used?
This medication has been manufactured as a liquid to be taken orally.
What dose should be taken?
GERD: for adults, the usual dose is 10-15mg, taken 4 times per day. The maximum dosage is 60mg per day. For children, the usual dose is 0.1-0.2mg/kg, given 4 times per day (30 minutes before meals, at bedtime). The duration of treatment should not exceed 12 weeks.
Diabetic gastroparesis: the usual dose for adults is 10mg, taken 4 times per day. The maximum dosage is 40mg/day.
Side Effects
As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Metoclopramide Oral Suspension.
Common side effects include, but may not be limited to:
- drowsiness
- headache
Serious side effects may include:
- signs of an allergic reaction
- tardive dyskinesia (due to long-term usage)
- changes in mood or behavior
- seizures
- rapid weight gain or unusual swelling
- signs of a neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS)

Precautions
Do NOT use Metoclopramide Oral Suspension if:
- You are allergic to any of the ingredients.
- You have liver disease or kidney disease.
- You have tardive dyskinesia.
- You have a pheochromocytoma.
- You have seizures or epilepsy.
- You have stomach/intestinal issues such as a blockage or perforation.
Many known drug interactions exist, including antihistamines, atovaquone, atropine, bupropion, cyclosporine, dioxin, fosfomycin, general anesthetics, insulin, MAOIs, muscle relaxers, narcotics, and phenothiazines. Consult with a doctor or pharmacist about your medications before starting your treatment.
This medication may not be suitable for people with certain conditions. It is important to consult with a doctor if you have any health conditions, including:
- diabetes
- depression
- liver or kidney disease
- alcohol consumption
- heart problems or hypertension
- a movement disorder like Parkinson's disease
- pregnancy or currently breastfeeding
Do not take this medication for longer than 12 weeks. Long-term usage or high-dose treatment may cause irreversible movement disorder, particularly in older women and patients with diabetes.
